It has been said that the natural form in which bacteria survive is not the free living form found in liquid cultures, but attached to surfaces in communicating, DNA exchanging colonies coated in a resistant polysaccharide coating and exhibiting physiological changes not seen in free living bacteria. These Bio films secrete specific chemicals causing new members to join the film and ensuring the shift in physiology leading to greater virulence, the process is known as Quorate Sensing. Bio-films are not moved by conventional cleaning and provide invisible and undetectable layers of infective and spoiling bacteria on all surfaces contacted by them.
